      Mastering the Festival Launch with Sean Farnel

      6pm-7pm - Reception 7pm-9pm - Workshop For most independent filmmakers, film festivals are a primary goal for premiering their productions and further developing their careers. Yet, with some 5000 film festivals worldwide, pragmatic and informed decisions must be made. ‘Mastering the Festival Launch’ presenter Sean Farnel will present an overview of film festival distribution strategies. Sean founded the documentary programme at The Toronto International Film Festival. He then became the first Director of Programming at Hot Docs.  During the ‘Mastering the Festival Launch’ presentation Sean will give an introduction to the Documentary Organization of Canada's Festival Concierge service. After the presentation there will be a Question & Answer with Edmonton- based documentary filmmakers Rosie Dransfeld (Transplanting Hope) and Ava Karvonen (Finding Bobbi) who will discuss their respective film festival experiences. He was the first Director of Programming for Hot Docs, which tripled its audience during his six-year tenure. Prior to joining Hot Docs, Sean created the popular screening series Doc Soup and founded the documentary programme at the Toronto International FIlm Festival. As well, he developed and launched TIFF's initial strategic plan for Learning programmes. Sean has done research and strategic consulting for the National Film Board of Canada, Telefilm Canada, the Documentary Organization of Canada, FIlmFreeway and other media companies in the private and public sectors. Along with writing for numerouis publications, Sean has served as a mentor, facilitator, panelist and juror at hundreds of film events.
