Social Media and Public Participation: How to Design and Host Effective Online Civic Engagement (2 day course)

Online tools have the potential to reach new participants and foster involvement on a wide range of issues. As an emerging field, there is still much trial and error, so this course will give you a leg up by examining what’s worked and what’s failed. This interactive course will teach you to create digital engagement campaigns that gather input creatively, enable collaborative online interactions, and sustain participation over time. You'll also learn how to use social media for participant recruitment, and how to integrate mobile communication into your participation strategy. Bring your computer as you’ll have an opportunity to experience both sides of online participation.    Participants completing this two-day course will learn to: Define objectives for their online engagement efforts.  Begin to design an online strategy to engage people at all depths of involvement and at various stages of the project.  Use simple online tools to “listen” to what people are saying online about a project’s key issues and people.  Begin to write content appropriate for social media public participation projects and understand the importance of two-way communication in this medium. Identify participation barriers for digital environments and explore mitigation approaches.  Recognize the value and capacity of online advertising. Design a simple measurement and evaluation plan for online engagement efforts.  This is a two-day course with Susanna Haas Lyon, a public engagement specialist with over 15-years of international project experience including bridging online and face-to-face engagement methods. She is a regular instructor at Simon Fraser University’s Dialogue and Civic Engagement program and a judge for IAP2 Canada’s Core Value Awards recognizing innovative pubic engagement practice and research.
